CPD One, Thurs 24th May, 2018 –
‘STORYTELLING, RHYTHM AND MUSIC’

Outline:
This day will look at storytelling techniques and ways of working with the natural world and outdoor spaces to create stories. The workshop is ideal for those wishing to work with literacy and communication in a creative way, responding to the natural world. We will explore the key elements that make good story structure; how to balance action, emotion and description in story; ways of keeping the thread and use of connectives; and importantly incorporating rhythm with the body and voice.

We will work with the natural world as a stimulus for story making as well as rhythm. This will include homemade and found percussion and using the voice for both rhythm and song to support story. You do not have to be able to sing, in fact the day will create an inviting space where educators can explore non-threatening easy techniques for working with the voice in the outdoors. This will be important for looking at how to storytell in an outdoor space and increase participants confidence to tell stories based on the natural world.

CPD Two, Fri 25th May, 2018 –
‘PLAY IN THE OUTDOORS – EXPLORING HOW TO FACILITATE AND OBSERVE PLAY IN THE OUTDOORS’

Outline:
“Play in the Outdoors – Exploring how to facilitate and observe play in the outdoors”.

“How does the outdoors support ‘the ecological and spiritual imagination of the mind’ of the child” will be a key question explored on this workshop. We will also be looking at all the other developmental areas humans experience during play.

Outdoor play and ‘games’ will be shared to explore the many possibilities the natural world and outdoor elements offer for meaningful play – from the creative to the rough and tumble. We will be exploring the ‘play framework’ and how we, as practitioners, spot cues from learners to interact with their play without destroying the ‘play’ and the ‘drive’ to play. We will also be examining when a ‘player’ enters a state of flow when the learning becomes integral to the human.

The day will look in detail at what practitioners can deduce from play. Are our observations and evaluations telling us what is really ‘going on’ for the learner and how do we check they are truthful. This can then inform our interventions and non-interventions as co-players.

How do we re-discover the world and mind of the child? – one of the many questions asked and explored on this workshop.
